The missing “it” is a reliable scorer at the biggest moment. In her freshman year, Paige was the “it “ factor for UCONN. She no longer is. AZZI has not shown it yet ( 30 plus points against St. John’s did not include a single “ must have” shot); and Sarah is too untested, as a freshman. So we have no one we can go to with confidence ( no Maya Moore; no Turasi or Bird; no Stewie). Add that to continued mediocrity in the post, and we are not looking at a champion candidate.

One observation is how often they miss inside shots or layups.

They miss open shots. They cannot beat good teams. We have all been calling them out on not being “tough”. Let’s use the right word—-not “clutch”—-worse, they have a choke gene leaking out. I believe this can change, but we have not seen it yet. The Big East is a bad league, with the exception of Creighton.

Paige has been my favorite player, but she just seems to be looking to get rid of the ball first. At the end of last year, she was great ——we need to see it now. Edward’s versus El-Alfy (sp?) is a massive loss. The latter is not ready for prime time.

They do play great defense; they do have great offensive stats, but it’s against weak competition. The big 3 have to actually be big. The “need to win” feel must show up

Paige will not change. I can only assume she is always trying to solve for the probability that a better shot will present itself relative to her current shot. She really may have a Gretsky gene. By comparison Clark is one dimensional—-I stress “by comparison”.

She does need to start with shooting the ball so defenses will be biased toward her for this approach to be optimal.

Why we all know Azzi can do many things well, very well. But as Steph Curry had originally noticed, she maybe is the best 3pt shooter ever. Ergo, solve for that.

Sarah is ridiculously good. Quickest hands ever. Paige has the best floor vision ever. Sarah will create opportunities and also receive opportunities.

It’s kind of amusing, but who currently has the longest home winning streak? Uconn!! 67 in a row. Their 3 losses were on the road against top 6 teams, except for Tennessee now 15.

The most underrated Uconn player might be Ashlyn Shade. Rebounds, defense, and of course 3pt shooting.

Clearly coaches have told El-Alfy to chill a bit on her on court exuberance. That’s good. Imagine if she pulls a mini Stewie and becomes a consistent force?

Chen is so solid and consistent, what a find.

Well, the tough part is no more losses. each top 10 team knows the same is for them. Who will create the most fear in the other teams?

Of course we don’t know, but I like our chanced

Not too difficult to say what's been missing, especially when what it is has been absent not only from the three losses against ranked opponents this season, but in the key losses that UConn has suffered in NCAA tournament games ever since the school's last championship. They lack essential athleticism and a dominant post player. Just using the Tennessee game as a microcosm, it was painful to see how no one, outside of K.K. Arnold was able to break down a defender and create their own shot, either by taking it to the hoop or rising up for an open jump shot. While the Vols had multiple players, mostly unheralded players, able to rise up and get open shots, While the elite UConn players, Bueckers, Strong, and Fudd looked slow and one-dimensional, unable to clear space for themselves. No one appreciates the program more than I do, but at some basic level, the problem also lies with the coaching staff, both in their inability to recruit more creative one-on-one players, and then in their inability to devisde schemes to get players more open opportunities through screens and other strategies that can mitigate their overall lack of individual offensive explosiveness. All that notwithstanding, in all those lost games, this season and in recent Tournaments, the squads, with one or two exceptions, have had enough talent and resolve to make the games close, sometimes excruciatingly so, and if not for the extraordinary amount of missed layups last Thursday, they would have done enough to beat Tennessee.

They are not good enough around the rim at both ends. They can demolish the big East but not elite teams in other leagues. Nevertheless I hope the front line wakes up against SC.

Paige running the offense was and is the key. Aubrey Griffin needs more minutes

Fudd et al just sent a message to women’s college basketball. Completely dismantled No 4.

They have the talent but not the “dog”. I thought Paige was a big game player - she still has the chance to show she is. UCONN has the talent to beat South Carolina on the road.

UCONN recruiters need to get some BIG girls for the inside game. 6'2" doesn't cut it against really big girls. Geno likes guards, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. Bigs are harder to find and more dominant. This has been the problem for many years.
